Introduction

Design Patterns: Reusable Solutions for Software Design

What Are Design Patterns?

Design Pattern: A reusable solution to a commonly occurring problem in software design.

Represents best practices refined over decades of real projects
Not finished code, a template for solving a recurring design problem
Applies across languages, frameworks, and paradigms

Why Design Patterns Matter

Avoid reinventing the wheel for problems others already solved
Battle-tested solutions reduce risk in your own designs
Speed up design discussions and code reviews
Make codebases easier for new developers to navigate

A Shared Vocabulary

Naming a pattern instantly conveys structure and intent

Just use a Factory here.

That one line replaces paragraphs of explanation
Reduces miscommunication between developers and architects
Enables concise, precise design conversations

What This Session Covers

The three main categories of design patterns
Practical, runnable code examples for each pattern
Visual diagrams to build intuition
Real-world applications tying patterns to production systems

The Three Main Categories

Design Patterns

Creational

How objects get created

Structural

How objects are composed and related

Behavioral

How objects communicate and share responsibility

Every pattern in this course falls into one of these three buckets

How We'll Learn Each Pattern

Intuition, a simple real-world analogy
When to use it, the signals that point to this pattern
Code example, a minimal working implementation
Real-world usage, where you'll actually see it in production

From Theory to Practice

A real-world e-commerce case study combining multiple patterns
A tour of anti-patterns, what happens when patterns go wrong
A complexity matrix to guide which pattern to learn next
The goal: recognize the right pattern for the right problem

Who This Is For

Developers designing new systems from scratch
Engineers refactoring messy, tangled code
Anyone preparing for system design interviews
Teams that want a shared design vocabulary

Key Takeaways

Design patterns are reusable, proven solutions to recurring design problems
They give developers a shared vocabulary for design discussions
This course covers Creational, Structural, and Behavioral patterns
Each pattern is taught via intuition, code, and real-world use
A capstone case study shows how patterns combine in practice
